Save Money with Electronic Cigarettes

August 4th, 2010

How many times have you started smoking a cigarette only to throw it away when it’s only halfway burned? Electronic cigarette smokers don’t have this problem. They can simply take a couple puffs, put it back in their pocket or carrying case, and be on their way. Since they are powered by a rechargeable battery, electronic cigarettes can be used over and over again with disposable and/or refillable cartridges. A single nicotine cartridge roughly equates to 12-15 cigarettes. Nicotine cartridges tend to come in 5 packs and cost around $1.5-2 . A typical pack of tobacco cigarettes costs around $6-7. It’s easy to see how much money you can save by making the switch to Electronic Cigarettes!

How Electronic Cigarettes Are Different From Tobacco Cigarettes

July 27th, 2010

electronic cigarette

As you browse the internet you will find many electronic cigarette supplier websites and blogs stating how much electronic cigarettes are like smoking tobacco cigarettes. While it is true that the act of vaping is very similar to smoking an analogue cigarette, there are some differences.

1) Electronic cigarettes require more prep than just grabbing a lighter. When contemplating changing your smoking habit, remember, electronic cigarette batteries need to be charged and cartridges need to be filled and/or changed. There are not huge time requirements to start vaping, but it is more intensive then using a lighter.

2) Using an electronic cigarette requires a little more planning than smoking tobacco cigarettes. When you run out of cigarettes you simply go down to the local gas station or convenience store and buy another pack. When you run out of e-liquid or cartridges or your battery/charger/atomizer go bad, it can take time to ship the product to you. It is a good idea to keep extra batteries, atomizers, cartridges, and e-liquid on hand. It also doesn?t hurt to have a back up e-cigarette charger, even if it is just a USB charger.

3) The action of smoking continues, but the inhaling is likely to be different from your tobacco cigarette. Often with e-cigarettes you need to inhale harder or more deeply to get the full sensation of smoking. This will depend on how you smoked originally and your brand of e-cigarette. Most smokers who use an electronic cigarette get used to this difference after a week or two.

4) The taste will be different. Although our e-liquid comes in tobacco or menthol flavor, it will taste different than your tobacco cigarettes. There is no way to fully reproduce the taste of actual smoke produced from combustion. However it is much like switching brands of cigarettes. Smokers become accustomed to it and many eventually prefer the taste of electronic cigarettes over their old ?analogues?.

Deciding to change a habit from tobacco cigarettes to electronic cigarettes does take some adjustments. However, if you are like so many others who have tried the Ecigmate, you will find it is a great alternative to your tobacco and become a true e-smoker.or even an advocate for the technology.

The Electric Cigarette Approved In Many Hospitals

The Electric Cigarette Approved In Many Hospitals

While the debate about electric cigarettes continues, lots more hospitals are allowing the use on their property, showing what some doctors like the e-cigarette

COLLEYVILLE, Texas, March 2 /PRNewswire/ – As special interest groups and politicians continue to make weak claims against the electric cigarette, another hospital in Tampa, Florida made the decision last week to allow the use of electronic cigarettes within their facility. Smoking is a recreational privilege that while banned in most public places, can be done with the alternative E-cigarette without offending others. This new invention allows the smoker to get their nicotine fix just like the coffee or soda drinkers get their caffeine fix. The benefits to management comes in the form of increased productivity in the workplace since the employees do not have to waste time traveling to designated smoking places; they no longer smell like a smoker and their employees health is not adversely affected by tobacco smoke. This translates into a big plus for the company bottom line in rough economic times.

Last July, the FDA issued a warning regarding the electric cigarette and it appears the public and medical industry just aren’t buying the story at a time when the public distrusts the government more than at any other time in history. On the heels of that announcement, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) in the United Kingdom released a favorable position on E-cigarettes stating; “E-cigarettes, which deliver nicotine without the harmful toxins found in tobacco smoke, are likely to be a safer alternative to smoking. In addition, E-cigarettes reduce secondhand smoke exposure since they do not produce smoke.â€

Prominent doctors and tobacco researchers, including Dr. Michael Siegel at the Boston University School of Public Health, Dr. Joel Nitzkin of the AAPHP Tobacco Control Task Force, and Dr. Brad Rodu, Endowed Chair, Tobacco Harm Reduction Research University of Louisville continue to publish the scientific benefits of the e-cigarettes that counter the misleading information regarding their safety.

A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that one-fifth of Americans – about 46 million – are still smoking. That number actually increased slightly from 2007 to 2008. The report appears in the Nov. 13 edition of the CDC’s Morbidity and Morality Weekly Report. Currently it is estimated that 1 in 40 smokers are now using the e-cigarette as an alternative and the trend is growing at a phenomenal speed.

The real opposition to E-cigarettes may be due to political fears from the loss of a portion of billions of dollars in tax revenue that tobacco cigarettes generate which can’t be justified against the E-cigarette. Tobacco cigarettes are heavily taxed under the guise of reimbursing the medical expense of treating smokers. As little as 3% of the money is actually used for that purpose while the rest is spent on projects considered to be more vital. Since E-cigarettes have not been proven to cause the type of health issues created by tobacco, they can only be taxed like any other consumer product.

Physicians Group Supports Electronic Cigarettes for Smoking Cessation and Challenges Opponents to Justify their Condemnation of the Product

July 26th, 2010

AAPHP has challenged opponents of electronic cigarettes to justify their condemnation of the product given that the FDA’s study of these devices found that they contain only very very tiny amounts of carcinogens, compared to the high levels present in traditional cigarettes.

According to a press released earlier in the month ?In July of this year, the Food and Drug Administration released a study that condemned electronic cigarettes as an unsafe alternative for smokers, but not all physicians are convinced that the study was accurate or even completely transparent to the tax payers that fund them. ?We urge FDA to make public the laboratory data behind the July 22 condemnation of electronic cigarettes, along with comparable data on pharmaceutical nicotine products and conventional cigarettes. Then, on the basis of these data, either fully justify or retract the July 22 condemnation of electronic cigarettes? says Joel L. Nitzkin, Chair of the American Association of Public Health Physicians Tobacco Control Task Force in a letter to the FDA.

The letter specifically targets the new tobacco legislation that passed through Congress this summer which gives the FDA power to regulate tobacco products in the United States and notes that the success rate of current smokers who attempt to quit by using pharmaceutical aids is as low as 5%. Making smokers more aware of less harmful alternatives, snus and e-cigarettes included, could significantly reduce the amount of smokers who die due to tobacco-related illnesses.

The message the AAPHP is sending to the FDA is a clear one and that is that electronic cigarettes are not the wildly dangerous alternatives that they have been portrayed as in news publications and on television, but perhaps one of the best products available for current smokers to switch to. Only time will tell if the FDA will retract their July study in favor of a more complete one or if smokers will continue to be limited to only products offered by big tobacco or big pharma with no explanation.

Recession Causing Increased Sales for E-Cigarettes

July 26th, 2010

An interesting reaction in the market today is the increase in sales of electronic cigarettes as the economy tightens everyone’s wallet. The e-cigarette is a cheaper alternative to tobacco cigarettes and many people feeling the pinch of the economy are turning to in droves every day.

The e-cigarette is an electronic device that does not actually emit any smoke. This benefit has made it a popular choice among those trying to get around the smoking bans. Technically you are not smoking when you use an e-cigarette. It may look like a cigarette, act like a cigarette and satisfy nicotine cravings like a cigarette, but it is not a cigarette. These are the usual reasons for smokers to turn to the device, but it seems as though the economy is causing another reason for smokers to turn to the smokeless device.

The cost of an e-cigarette might be expensive up front for some consumers, but when the cost of refilling cartridges or even buying new cartridges is calculated, it is clear that the electronic cigarette is a much cheaper option for smokers. In today?s economy, it is becoming more and more difficult for smokers to afford the expensive tobacco product. Cigarettes can be a huge drain on a personal budget, but for some very difficult to quit. The electronic is not just a cheaper substitute for tobacco, it is also an effective nicotine delivery system. This means that smokers are not just getting a device that looks and acts like a cigarette, they are getting real nicotine that their body craves.

The electronic device has not been without its critics. Many anti smoking advocates believe that the device is much to close to a real cigarette to be a healthy alternative. Others point to the lack of studies conducted on the product. Whatever the anti smoking crowd has to say on the device is of little consequence to the smoker who is looking for a method to quit, save money or just spend time out with friends.

As smoking bans take hold all over the world, it is very likely that the electronic cigarette will continue to rise in popularity. Today?s smokers are finding it a great alternative in the economic climate and others have found it to be a way to quit smoking entirely and save even more money.

The e-cigarette is also a healthier alternative to tobacco cigarettes. The nicotine inhaled from an electronic cigarette does not contain the hundreds of chemicals that are found in traditional cigarettes. While there still may not be enough studies on the e-cigarette to understand its benefits completely, there is no reason to deny that the fewer chemicals in an electronic cigarette is by far healthier than a traditional cigarette. For some smokers that is enough to convince them that the e-cigarette is a worthwhile alternative.

It is likely that as the economy worsens the e-cigarette is likely to continue its growth in sales. More people will discover the economic benefits of the product before they discover all of the other benefits that may come with the device.

Due to the relative newness of the technology and the possible relationship to tobacco laws, electronic cigarette legislation and public health investigations are currently pending in many countries. A recently sensationalized test by the FDA concluded that two of the manufacturers of e-cigarettes had small samples of one of the same sixty known carcinogens as regular cigarettes. The FDA performs these tests on thousands of products every year and recalls or bans sale of items it deems dangerous to public safety.

E-Cigarettes have NOT been banned and are sold in all 50 states.

See: E-Cigarette Truth - so who would gain from the propaganda?

It should come as no surprise that Philip Morris firmly supports the Family Smoking Prevention And Tobacco Control Act. The bill made producing tobacco products more expensive and, as we’ve seen, maybe even endanger non-tobacco products. The effect is to make life more difficult for Philip Morris’s smaller competitors, because they cannot absorb the costs of regulation as well.
• In Australia, the sale of electronic cigarettes containing nicotine is illegal.
• In Austria and Denmark, electronic cigarettes are considered medical devices, and nicotine cartridges medicinal products. Therefore electronic cigarettes need to be CE-marked, and nicotine cartridges registered as medicinal products, before either can be legally sold.
• In Canada, e-cigarettes are banned pending government testing.
• In Hong Kong, the possession or the sale of electronic cigarettes is illegal. Ironic, considering many are made in China.
• In The Netherlands, use of electronic cigarettes is allowed, but advertising is forbidden pending European Union legislation.
• In the United Kingdom, electronic cigarette use is currently unrestricted, with celebrity nightclub Chinawhite allowing use of the devices indoors, where traditional cigarette smoking is prohibited.
• In the United States, electronic cigarettes are currently unrestricted. Electronic cigarettes are currently not subject to restriction under the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act.
The basic idea is this: it looks like a cigarette, delivers nicotine like a cigarette, and even puffs “smoke” like a cigarette (actually water vapor.) But an e-cigarette doesn’t have any of the tobacco or additives of a cigarette. It’s just a battery-charged cartridge.

But some people aren’t comfortable with the idea of an alternative that is is still addictive. E-cigarettes currently exist in a legal gray zone — they have not been officially approved or banned by the FDA, and are still commonly sold in the US.

What exactly is the “mistake” that consumers would be making to think that e-cigarettes are safer than normal cigarettes? While ingesting nicotine is not “safe” in an absolute sense, e-cigarettes are smokeless.

As mentioned, there is debate about whether or not the FDA has jurisdiction over e-cigarettes. The Family Smoking Prevention And Tobacco Control Act was passed by the House on April 2nd, and is now in the Senate. One of its provisions would allow the FDA “to review and consider the evidence for additional indications for nicotine replacement products.” That could be interpreted to allow e-cigarettes to fall under the FDA’s jurisdiction.

Another unique thing about e-cigarettes is that unlike the tobacco industry, which is dominated by a few large corporations (Altria, which owns Philip Morris, produces half the cigarettes in the US), some smaller firms have been able to produce and market these devices.

Currently E-Cigarettes are NOT
subject to the new tobacco tax.

“Prominent Public Health Physicians and Tobacco Researchers Expose Double Standard in the FDA’s Recent Study of Electronic Cigarettes and Challenge the FDA’s Alarmist Attitude Toward the Devices

BOSTON, July 27 — The FDA recently went public with misleading information about the safety of electronic cigarettes and the marketing of the devices, not only using its clout but recruiting other prominent organizations to demonize a product that has great public health benefit potential.

A group of prominent doctors and tobacco researchers, including Dr. Michael Siegel at the Boston University School of Public Health, Dr. Joel Nitzkin of the AAPHP Tobacco Control Task Force, and Dr. Brad Rodu, Endowed Chair, Tobacco Harm Reduction Research University of Louisville, challenge the FDA to provide the full quantitative data of the study upon which the FDA has based its warning against electronic cigarettes. They are concerned that the FDA’s disingenuous targeting of electronic cigarettes through a biased presentation of the scientific data has had significant negative impact upon the public perception of electronic cigarettes, when the best available evidence suggests that these have shown that the devices offer great potential to reduce serious health issues among traditional tobacco smokers.

In a July 22 news release, the FDA cited the detectable presence of carcinogens and “toxic chemicals†in a “small sample†of electronic cigarette cartridges as reason for alarm, singling out nitrosamines as particularly toxic. What the FDA fails to inform the public is that detectable amounts of carcinogens are also present in nicotine replacement products such as NicoDerm CQ and Nicorette gum, both approved by the FDA, and nitrosamines that can be also found in food items such bacon and beer. This double standard and alarmist attitude has had the significant and unfortunate effect of inducing hysteria among the public, discouraging tobacco smokers from using a product which is thought to be a significantly safer alternative to traditional tobacco.

Regrettably, the FDA has used biased reporting of this small and inconclusive study, the complete results of which have not been made public, to secure the vocal support of groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics Tobacco Consortium, the Institute for Global Health, and the American Lung Association in their attack on electronic cigarettes. These researchers argue that it is absurd to consider taking electronic cigarettes off the market when it is the conventional ones which have been shown to be killing people. Further, the electronic cigarette community calls for accurate and fair reporting relative to the findings and statements of prominent medical professionals in favor of this new and important technology and challenges the media to tell the other side of the story.

“The FDA’s laboratory findings actually indicate that electronic cigarettes are much, much safer than conventional cigarettes,†says Dr. Michael Siegel. “The traces of carcinogens present are also present in nicotine replacement products. The FDA and the anti-smoking groups have fallen into a huge analytical trap as they have failed to ask the appropriate question. The question they are asking is: ‘Are electronic cigarettes safe?’ That is not the right question. The right question is: ‘Are electronic cigarettes much safer than traditional ones?’â€

Dr. Rodu states, “The FDA tested e-cigarettes for TSNAs using a questionable sampling regimen, and the methods that were so sensitive that the results may have no possible significance to users. The agency failed to report specific levels of these contaminants, and it has failed to conduct similar testing of nicotine medicines that have been sold in the U.S. for over 20 years. These are not the actions of an agency that is science-based and consumer-focused. These pseudo-scientific actions are clearly intended to form the justification for banning a category of products that are probably 99.9% safer than cigarettes.â€

Dr. Joel Nitzkin speaking as individual states, “The newly adopted FDA/Tobacco legislation will give full FDA approval to currently marketed conventional cigarettes. The new law encourages cigarette companies to produce new “reduced exposure†cigarettes to be marketed as reduced exposure products, with no scientific evidence that such reductions in exposure will reduce risk of future tobacco related illness and death. In the context of these provisions of the newly adopted FDA/Tobacco bill — FDA should be encouraging, not maligning the manufacture and sale of electronic cigarettes, and working with manufacturers to assure the highest possible quality control.â€
